Senior Simulation R&D Engineer, FEA, Advanced Packaging Technologies: Experimentation, Modeling, and Simulation
Job Summary:
This is an exciting opportunity to join the Edwards Lifesciences Advanced Packaging Technology (APT) team and work with a dedicated team of R&D and NPD engineers while focusing on experimental mechanics and advanced computational modeling. The APT team consists of engineers focused on providing expertise in materials, mechanical performance, sensors, and testing. The APT computational modeling engineer will support all of Edwards Lifesciences’ business units by providing efficient and effective quantitative analysis using experimental techniques and simulations. In this senior engineering role, the engineer will perform experiments of medical device packaging, and related materials to understand package and device interactions during transportation to support project teams and R&D efforts. The engineer will utilize extensive knowledge and expertise of experimental mechanics to advance innovation and develop solutions that satisfy project requirements. Responsibilities:
· Develop finite element analysis (FEA) models to validate designs with experimentation, evaluate design concepts, and support concept selection for various packaging projects.
· Access High Performance Computing (HPC) systems and FEA subject matter experts across the organization to offer insights using modeling and simulation
· Support project teams by providing engineering knowledge and expertise to the design and development of new product packages
· Analyze and critically evaluate experimental data for comparison with computational models
· Author internal whitepapers and technical summaries.
· Collaborate with other engineers in various cross-functional teams to gather input for development of experimental methods.
· Develop and manage work plans and timelines within the scope of assigned projects.
· Work in a cross functional team environment which includes R&D, Regulatory, Quality, Manufacturing, and Supply Chain to ensure project objectives are met.
· Some domestic and international travel (up to 5%).
Qualifications
Minimum education requirement is a Master’s degree with 2 years of experience preferably in the medical device industry or PhD in engineering, mechanical or biomedical engineering.
· A minimum of 4 years of experience with mechanical components
· Significant experience with FEA modeling and analysis: Abaqus preferred.
· Experience building and solving nonlinear FEA models using explicit and implicit methods; modal dynamics experience such as random vibration is a plus
· Knowledge of selecting and calibrating material constitutive models involving nonlinear elasticity, plasticity, fatigue, and creep
· Know-how to request appropriate mechanical testing to incorporate input parameters into FEA models
· Familiarity and experience with polymer testing as well as CFD (computational fluid dynamics)
· Experience performing Design of Experiments (DOEs) and parametric optimization of FEA models is preferred
· CAD modeling and D4169 testing experience are a plus
· Must be a highly motivated self-starter who takes pride in taking ownership and driving results
· Passion for creating innovative, high quality products
· Ability to perform Verification and Validation (V&V) and effectively communicate relevance of results
· Strong mechanical aptitude with proven ability to apply engineering knowledge and judgment to solve complex engineering problems
· Excellent technical documentation and communication skills and interpersonal relationship skills including consultative and relationship management skills with ability to drive achievement of objectives
· Demonstrated project ownership and accountability
